Plastic Pollution News
Plastic may very well be our undoing long before the effects of anthropogenic climate change do us in. Plastic is fast killing ocean wildlife, and a wise human has stated that if the oceans die, we die. The anti-plastic movement has burgeoned from nowhere in the past few years, but governments have failed to act again. Some anti-plastic movements and websites have sprung into being only recently. And since plastic has become a ubiquitous subject in news accounts, we offer the latest plastic pollution news.

America’s Plastic Makers® are committed to doing our part to end plastic waste in the environment. Solving this multi-dimensional global plastic waste problem requires an “all hands-on deck” approach, so we are working and partnering with scientists, conservation groups and government agencies from across the globe toward real, workable solutions that lead to a future in which all plastics are recovered and repurposed to benefit people and our planet. We want to be clear: Plastic waste in our environment—in our ocean—is unacceptable, and we’re doing something about it.
Aayaan Aggarwal, founder of this movement, is an aware planetarian. At a tender age of 6 years, he understood the threat of plastic to our planet and strongly discourages the use of single-use plastic. The zeal in him to protect the planet has led him to initiate an anti-plastic movement. In the first phase, he is approaching restaurants to stop and discourage the use of plastic straws. He believes that it is totally unnecessary and is the easiest to avoid. He urges everyone to say no to plastic straw as he believes that this is the bare minimum anyone can do to save their planet... to save their future generation...
Microplastics in the Marine Environment Increasing knowledge and building community capacity for action against microplastics pollution in marine environments
Disposable plastics are everywhere and can have devastating impacts on wildlife. Since mass production started in 1950, plastics have permeated our world at a frenetic pace with roughly 300 million tons manufactured worldwide in 2013. It is estimated that between 10 and 20 million tons of plastic debris end up in the oceans each year. Roughly 80 percent of that comes from land sources. Although it seems daunting, there are steps that can be taken to reduce our plastic footprint. Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited facilities have a unique opportunity to lead by example. The opportunity lies in doing what is right by our conservation missions, educating visitors and initiating change along our facilities’ supply chains.

We walk on our beaches, they go on for miles and we think to ourselves, they are endless, eternal. They are not. Like everything else in our natural world, beaches are fragile, easily destroyed, impossible to replace once they are taken away. That is why we need Coastal Care, a non-profit foundation dedicated to defending the beaches and shorelines of our shared planet. Through programs of education, advocacy, and celebration, Coastal Care extends a human hand to assist our great mother and protect her health.
In 2019, CCB will start implementing a new project: “Plastic Free Ocean“. The project activities will support implementation of the EU Plastics Strategy and the idea is to address the growing pollution of the Baltic Sea (and through it – the world ocean) by single-use plastic items, primary and secondary microplastics, and associated toxic chemicals through a combination of: – policy-oriented measures – awareness-raising public campaign – monitoring activities – assistance to identified target groups from private and municipal sector in switching to plastic-free alternatives.
Take Personal Responsibility to End Plastic Pollution Currently about 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year to make bags, bottles, packages, and other commodities for people all over the world. Unfortunately, only about ten percent of this plastic is properly recycled and reused. The rest ends up as waste in landfills or as litter in our natural environment, where it leaches dangerous chemicals into the nearby soil and water, endangering humans and wildlife alike.

In 2016 we formed the UK microbead coalition with Fauna & Flora International, Greenpeace UK and Marine Conservation Society. The coalition successfully campaigned for the UK Government to adopt a world leading ban on microbeads in cosmetics and personal care products which will prevent millions of microplastic particles entering our seas every day. We have also been working at the European level, initially helping to secure Europe-wide measures to address plastic carrier bags and more recently as part of the Rethink Plastic Alliance focused on strengthening EU legislation related to plastics and waste. In 2018 we secured two major EU legislative agreements; an ambitious revision to legislation governing waste from ships and fishing gear and a new EU Directive that introduces measures to target the top 10 single-use plastics found on beaches and fishing gear, including bans on certain single-use plastics.
We're calling for urgent government action to stop the flow of plastic pollution into our environment. We've won some game-changing laws over the years, including doorstep recycling. Now it's time to get drastic on plastic. We can all take small steps to avoid plastic. But for real impact, we need manufacturers and retailers to act. We want legislation to phase out non-essential, single-use plastics now.
Global Plastic Watch (GPW) is a digital platform that maps the world’s plastic pollution in near real-time using a unique combination of satellite imagery and artificial intelligence.
Save Our Seas From Plastic Pollution! It is estimated that up to 12 million metric tonnes of plastic enter our seas worldwide every year. The sea is choking and can’t cope. Governments can turn the tide. Ministers are revising European Union waste laws right now. Ask key environment ministers* to fight against plastic pollution!
We are a pioneering charity focused on reducing marine pollution, especially plastics. We are led entirely by volunteers and all donations go straight towards fulfilling our mission. One hundred percent. Unlike most marine charities out there, our primary focus is not research, advocacy or picking litter from the beaches. We believe the best way to reduce marine plastics is to tackle it at the core of the problem – human behaviour. We have successfully completed several international projects. How do we do it? We connect the dots and show people how irresponsible littering will affect their own personal lives. Environmentally, aesthetically and to their well-being.
Biggest Online Petition against #PlasticPollution The who, what, where, when and how of banning a global plastic menace. It started off as a simple petition against the 7-Eleven’s in Thailand and their foolish ritual of loading up every customer with a handful of single-use plastic as they exited the store. The universe, however, had bigger plans for us. Our petition soon gained momentum, going viral and turning into a worldwide crusade against plastic pollution and its perpetrators. A stand not just against 7-Eleven but all such businesses that take our planet and our conscience, too much for granted.
For us, our desire to make a positive change began when we began studying the UN Global Goals about a year ago. We were being homeschooled by our parents and, being children who have always cared for the environment and the world we live in, they thought it was a fitting topic to work on. The Global Goals consist of 17 world goals, brought together by the UN, which 193 world leaders have pledged to try and achieve by the year 2030. The goals consist of things like ending poverty, fighting inequality and tackling climate change. But one goal that piqued our interest was number 14: Life Below Water. It was through this that we came across the disastrous impacts that plastic pollution was having on our environment.
The Last Plastic Straw strives to educate the public about the absurdity of single use plastic, its effects on our health, our environment, and our oceans. We aim to eliminate from the source, single use plastic pollution. How You Can Help Join us in a global movement to eliminate plastic drinking straws from our landfills, our streams, our oceans, and our beaches. Simply request “no straw” at bars & restaurants and share your commitment with others. Encourage your favorite restaurant or bar to only provide straws on request from the customer and to use reusable or naturally compostable options to the plastic straw.

Marine Litter is one of the largest emerging environmental challenges and needs to be tackled at global, regional and national level. The plastic associations in Europe are increasingly engaged in protecting the marine environment and encouraging stakeholders from industrial, political, scientific, non-governmental and social spheres to act together to preserve the oceans and coastal areas. With this in mind, we want to address how the plastics industry and its full value chain can support and contribute to the development of action plans against marine litter on regional and local scale.

Plastic, of course, is uniquely problematic because it’s nonbiodegradable and therefore sticks around for a lot longer (like up to 1,000 years longer) than other forms of trash. And we're not just talking about people dumping their garbage overboard. Around 80 percent of marine litter actually originates on land—either swept in from the coastline or carried to rivers from the streets during heavy rain via storm drains and sewer overflows. So the best thing we can do to protect our waterways is try to keep as much plastic as possible out of the waste stream in the first place. The good news? There are many small ways you can have a big impact.
Nurdle Patrol started in November 2018 after a large number of plastic pellets washed up on Mustang and North Padre Islands in Texas during September 2018. We are looking to gather information about where nurdles are located, remove the nurdles from the environment, and create awareness about the nurdle issue
Non campaign: Ocean Pollution and Climate Change Pollution and contaminants enter the oceans through a number of outlets: offshore oil and gas drilling, coal-burning power plants, aquaculture, mercury-based chlorine plants, plastics, marine debris and more. Once these toxins enter the environment, they can cause long-lasting damage to marine ecosystems and adversely impact wildlife and fisheries.
Plastic seems to make up over 40% of litter. Most litter begins in our streets into street drains that are piped to urban streams, flowing into rivers, then entering the Ocean. Study’s reflect 5 countries make up over 60% of all pollution getting into the ocean. One reason to volunteer with Ocean Blue is to protect ocean beaches and other natural resources at coastal cleanup by cleaning up beaches. Ocean Blue Ocean friendly volunteer beach cleanups removed over 10,000 pounds of litter at conservation efforts and public charities outreach events every year, thanks to volunteers like you, one beach clean up at a time. Join the Ocean Blue wildlife conservation society and play an important role to help save habitat loss in urban streams and national river cleanup events in the United States that are historically our american rivers.
The oceans are drowning in waste It has been estimated that nine million tons of plastic waste finds its way into the oceans every year. About 20% of this waste originates from ships, while the bigger part is land-borne – carried to the sea by sewers, rivers, wind or tides. Plastic is a nearly omnipresent part of our daily life. It has become a plague to our planet, because it is being used inappropriately. It is nonsense to make disposable packaging from materials that persist for centuries. On average, thin plastic bags – still a matter of course for many of us when shopping – are turned into waste within 25 minutes. That is hardly responsible use of such a persistent and destructive resource.
OVER 5 TRILLION PIECES OF PLASTIC CURRENTLY LITTER THE OCEAN Trash accumulates in 5 ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
Oceans & oceans of microfibers. Time to clean up our act! Plastic in the environment does not biodegrade, but fragmentizes We are now living in the Plastic Age, where almost all plastics ever made still exist
Have you ever walked along a beautiful beach and been surprised to find a piece of plastic at your feet? You might be even more surprised to learn that together with volunteers like you, we’ve picked up more than 220 million pounds of trash in the last 30 years. And the problem goes deeper than what you’re seeing on the beaches. Scientists estimate that more than 8 million metric tons of plastic is entering our ocean every year. If we don’t act now, there could be a pound of plastic for every 3 pounds of fish in the ocean within the next decade. Ocean Conservancy has been at the forefront of the trash free seas challenge for more than 30 years. Trash in the ocean has serious consequences for all of us, but there is hope. With your help, we can solve the ocean plastic crisis together.
Ocean Crusaders free online education program is a resource available to teachers and parents world-wide, to download and present to their students/children. It educates them of about the oceans, the creatures in them and the hazards they are facing with an emphasis on giving them ideas on what they can do in their every day lives to make a difference. The greatest issue our oceans face is that the world is unaware of the problem we are causing. The convenient plastic bag and plastic products are everywhere and no one thinks of where they are going. Humans slaughter thousands of dolphins, turtles and sharks and hundreds of whales every year with little knowledge of what damage we are causing. With representatives across the globe and growing constantly, our education program is a unique learning tool and available to everyone free of charge.

“Plastic is ubiquitous in modern society and seemingly unavoidable. But is it worth risking the lives of marine species, the health of the oceans and our own future in the name of convenience? By taking baby steps to minimize hidden plastics in our lives, we can crush plastic at its source and help the world take a giant collective leap into a better future,” said Nil Zacharias, Co-Founder of One Green Planet. If we all take steps to identify where we use plastic and actively look for alternatives, we can drastically cut down on the amount of plastic pollution that finds its way into the ocean. The average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic a year. If everyone in the U.S. alone were to stop using plastic that would keep over 555 billion pounds of plastic out of the oceans!

We all have the right to live in an environment without plastic pollution Doubling in 10 years Plastic pollution is threatening the marine ecosystem worldwide. Over the next 10 years, the amount of marine plastic waste will double and if we do not act, in 2050 the oceans might contain more plastic waste than fish by weight. Plastic Change is committed to reversing that trend. Vision Plastic Change has a vision that human beings are entitled to live in an environment free of plastic pollution. This means that future generations should be able to continue living off marine resources and eat plastic-free fish and shellfish, for instance, and enjoy living in a nature that is not polluted by plastic waste.

APP has 10 Core Beliefs that guide our decisions and help us prioritize where we believe we can make change happen the fastest. 1. The power of simple APP’s believes in plain speaking. It’s either plastic, or it’s not plastic. Somehow plastic has become a very complicated issue and it suits those that don’t want change to complicate it even further. Our goal is to bring a straight-talking clarity to the world of plastic, using language that everyone relates to. Bravo for plain English!
Plastic is versatile, lightweight, flexible, moisture resistant, strong, and relatively inexpensive. Those are the attractive qualities that lead us, around the world, to such a voracious appetite and over-consumption of plastic goods. However, durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials that are used in the production of so many products all, ultimately, become waste with staying power. Our tremendous attraction to plastic, coupled with an undeniable behavioral propensity of increasingly over-consuming, discarding, littering and thus polluting, has become a combination of lethal nature.
Plastic Pollution Coalition is a growing global alliance of individuals, organizations, businesses, and policymakers working toward a world free of plastic pollution and its toxic impacts on humans, animals, waterways and oceans, and the environment. Plastic Pollution Solutions consults with organizations to reduce their single-use plastic footprint by exploring innovative solutions to implement throughout their value chains. We also advise on ways to amplify these examples of sustainability leadership.
We have big aspirations - that the only footprint we leave behind, are those that disappear with the rise of the tide - that there is no plastic in nature by 2030. In order to reduce our plastic footprint, we must advocate for new policy standards, new incentives for industry, and new models of innovation for plastic avoidance, use, reuse and waste management.
“Every minute, the equivalent of one full garbage truck of plastic trash is dumped in the sea. That is 1440 trucks per 24 hours and 8 BILLION kilos per year.”
There's no one to blame, but ourselves. Our throw-away culture. Our consumerism. Our lives of excess. Our apathy toward our home and our own bodies. It's time to stop. It's time we fix it. A Powerful Driver for a Solution to Plastic Waste Litter of plastic is probably the most visible aspect of the production of such high volumes of plastic. Many plastics float in water and many items blow around in the wind. While litter itself is a human caused problem, there are many factors that contribute to our overwhelming litter problem.

Precious Plastic is a project trying to boost plastic recycling worldwide. We try to do that by providing tools and knowledge to people around the world. For free, of course. Trying to give people solutions to fight plastic pollution. Precious Plastic was started by Dave Hakkens in 2013. By now, the project counts on the contributions of dozens of people joining the project with their skills and knowledge. The project is also helped by hundreds of monthly donations on our Patreon and thousands single donations. Check the video below for the full story behind Precious Plastic. The project has been picked up by hundreds of people around the world that built the machines and started recycling plastic waste. Check our map to get a feeling.
Recycle Rebuild aims to create jobs, help the environment, empower communities and resolve supply/demand issues for specific building materials and products after natural disasters. We do this by identifying products that are in high demand, then employing and training members of the affected communities to help them use up to 100% recycled waste products. These materials can then be sold at an affordable price and the profits reinvested into the newly-formed micro-enterprise, creating a self-sustaining business that can grow to meet the wider demands of the region for the long term.

This is not just about plastic While most studies have looked specifically at microplastics and synthetic microfibers and their effect on sea creatures, all of our clothing is making microfibers. That includes cotton, wool, hemp, etc. There are dyes and other chemicals associated with organic clothing as well as synthetics and for that reason, we need to stop all of this manmade fiber from entering our waterways. There are no filter technologies currently available that will both stop microfiber pollution and allow water to flow at required rates. In addition, this is not a problem easily regulated away, like microbeads.
Sailors for the Sea unites boaters to protect the ocean. The ocean is in trouble. Suncoast Rise Above Plastics Coalition We are a coalition of 17 organizations who envision a future without coastal and marine debris, a world where we ditch single-use plastics in our daily lives, and a time where we protect the coastlines and oceans we love. We pursue our vision through research, education and engaging citizens, local businesses, and community leaders.
Plastic pollution is the ‘new sewage’. Tackling it is our number one priority. Plastic Pollution Plastic pollution has sadly become synonymous with all of our favourite coastal activities - from surfing to swimming, beach holidays to wildlife watching - it is simply an expected part of our experience. But one that we should not, and do not, accept.
Rise Above Plastics is designed to eliminate the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and by advocating for a reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics.
OUR IMPACT 10 million pieces of rubbish removed Participation in 129 countries 300,000 people educated Join the movement to make plastic pollution a thing of the past.

TAP is an outreach initiative which aims to educate global travelers about the harmful impacts of using disposable plastic water bottles and therefore encourage travelers to be prepared to clean their own drinking water. Our vision is to catalyze a self-sustaining global movement resulting it the near-elimination of travelers’ dependence on disposable plastic water bottles. Why use alternatives to disposable plastic water bottles? The use of disposable plastic bottles while traveling is: hard on the environment, hard on the communities left with the garbage, it’s expensive, and it can often be unhealthy. No traveler wants to leave a trail of plastic water bottles behind them, but many don’t know how to avoid it. The solution is easy: Carry a reusable water bottle and a method to clean the water. Help avoid the waste of hundreds of millions of plastic bottles each year.
While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single-use or disposable plastic — with severe environmental consequences. Around the world, one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute, while up to 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are used worldwide every year. In total, half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once — and then thrown away. Plastic waste is now so ubiquitous in the natural environment that scientists have even suggested it could serve as a geological indicator of the Anthropocene era. So how did we get here?
Upcycle the Gyres Society On a mission to make the ocean a plastic-free zone.

LEARN MORE Throw-Away-Free Communities Imagine taking Throw-Away-Free to an entire city - no more throw-away when you’re sitting down to eat, and all the restaurants and food delivery businesses are using reusable to-go cups and to-go boxes that are part of a community-wide system. Sound crazy? Pie in the sky? The great news is that it’s happening right now.

Let’s Make a #PlasticPact! Home > Let’s Make a #PlasticPact! The statistics on plastic are staggering. Estimated 500 million plastic straws used in the US each day. 35 billion plastic water bottles thrown away each year in the US. 50% of the plastic we use is single use. Plastic doesn't degrade, it just breaks into smaller and smaller pieces.
We are filling the oceans with millions of tons of plastics and other trash daily. Researchers now estimate there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans by the year 2050. This trash threatens animals, birds and marine life that mistake it for food. But it also threatens us. As plastic breaks down in the water, dangerous chemicals become concentrated in the marine food web and contaminate the seafood we eat
Take Action on Plastic We need to build a huge movement if we’re going to turn the tide on plastic pollution. Join our fight now.
